What I'm Watching on Netflix

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

This week's picks from my Netflix Instant Watch Library or mail queue:

TV Show:
The Cosby Show is arguably the best sitcom in American television history. It certainly gets my vote for being groundbreaking and for simply being LOL funny. Watching the reruns was like time traveling back to my childhood. Seeing two black professionals raise five children in a loving home was a revelation for me. Back then it was okay to say that a TV influenced your kids because of shows like Cosby.

Movie:
Killers is a movie with potential despite a premise that has been done before and better (see Jamie Lee Curtis' performance as the unsuspecting housewife married to a professional assassin in True Lies and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's sizzling hot double-cross in Mr. and Mrs. Smith). This films shoot itself in the foot by being cutesy. Spies are supposed to be sexy, but Ashton Kutcher as trained-killer Spencer comes off as goofy even with his killer bod and his chemistry with Katherine Heigl's Jen is a little off, more like best buddies than lovers. One redeeming quality is Tom Selleck's turn as Jen's no nonsense dad. He is the only sexy twist.

I loved Cosby growing up! It was one of the shows we always watched.

Also, I enjoyed Killers overall because I enjoyed Tom Selleck and I thought the chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher was fun to watch. It was a bit "absent minded-professorish" and certainly "cute" but for some reason it didn't bug me. It's not on my must watch again list, though.

I grew up watching the Cosby show and it was definitely one of those shows the whole family sat down to watch together. Oddly, I think it really influenced my perception of African American people. From kindergarten through 2nd grade, I went to a predominantly African American school so that was totally normal, and then we moved to a predominantly white neighborhood but we were pretty poor. So as a little kid, if you'd asked me if I had any opinions about African American people in general, I would have said something like: "They are good friends. And they are richer than our family."

The Cosby Show will forever be the best show ever! I remember everyone making sure they were home Thursday night to watch it.

What a great show it was (Cosby). I didn't have the greatest upbringing, but the nights we watched Cosby will always be a highlight.

I've never seen anything with Kutcher that I liked so I always get turned off when I see that he's in a movie.

Funny, my daughter was just watching Killers, which got my husband wanting to watch it, which got my other daughter wanting to watch it, but in the end, they all told me to skip it. They felt the same as you about it.
