eShakti Dresses Make Me Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty!
Wednesday, November 13, 2013
The holiday season is upon us and that can only mean one thing...you need a unique holiday dress for all those dinner parties!
eShakti.com is at your service. It's like have a personal tailor because, not only do they offer a wide selection of women's dresses, tops and skirts in all styles from sizes 0-36W, they will customize almost anything to suit you!
I was having a tough time finding a dress to wear to a work fundraiser when eShakti offered to send me one! I narrowed down my choices to these three:
I ultimately chose the one on the right for the color and "forgiving" material. This ruffle cascade stretch crepe dress had my name written all over it.
This dress was perfect: the perfect color for the season, the perfect length for my petite frame. Plus, it is machine washable which is a bonus because this mama don't have time to run to the dry cleaner! Only one thing was missing...sleeves! So I added them! And here I am all dressed up for the fundraiser last Thursday:
I turned heads when I walked into the event that evening. People were stopping me to tell me how much they loved the dress. It put a pep in my step that night! Head over to eShakti.com and pick out something guaranteed to make you stand out from the party crowd this fall!
Score the Best Fashion Discounts at Modnique!
Monday, November 4, 2013
Modnique.com is like no other discount fashion retail site. First off, it is HUGE! There are thousands of deals for the taking. I am not exaggerating when I say you will get lost in this site. This is what I saw when I landed on the homepage...dresses, earrings, and boots oh my!
When I became a mom I lost my fashion sense along with half my brain cells. But now I am in fashion recovery. I have been having a ton of fun lately rediscovering my personal style while shopping online. I call my new style mom chic, sensible clothing accentuated with fancy accessories like statement jewelry and bold print scarves. I like shopping online for the convenience, variety and deals so I gladly took Modnique.com up on their offer to shop their site.
Modnique lives up to their tag line, "fashion without borders" because they really go above and beyond handpicking designer brands at clearance prices. They have have everything for the whole family from Accessories to Zapatillas, as well as beauty products and home goods. Everything is brand name and on trend. If you are looking for luxury brands they got you covered. Up to 48% off of Tiffany and Co...?! It's like having a premium outlet mall at your fingertips!
I browsed Modnique.com for hours and got a crash course in international fashion. I learned about several global brands I hadn't heard of before like Jenrigo luxury handbags made in Italy. No one does leather handbags like the Italian designers! I drooled over this page for a good minute. As you can see popular items sell out on Modnique so you don't want to drag your feet:
One thing I truly appreciate about Modnique.com (besides the knock-your-socks-off prices) is how well the site is organized. Each limited-time sale can be sorted by brand, size, color and price to help you narrow down your search and add to your cart even faster. It is a cinch to shop the retail section too because each category (Accessories, Apparel, Beauty, Jewelry, Shoes) is sorted by designer and then you can filter items by gender, style, size, and color. I would like to see a search box and a better scrolling bar to make site navigation even easier. There is also a daily deal that you must see to believe. I snapped up this pair of VENETIAURUM 24K gold plated silver two-toned Murano glass earrings valued $160 for $11!
Here is what else I scored at Modnique.com. A gorgeous Shelby and Palmer Ruffle Dress perfect for work at 68% off. A cute Renee C. Sheer Printed Blouse great for Casual Fridays at 75% off. And a Papillon Multitone Peasant Dress to wear next spring/summer at 83% off. You see that "Make an Offer" Button? I used this to save another dollar on the blouse!

So here is what my shopping cart looked like. I bought four items and I didn't even use my entire gift certificate. Many Modnique items ship in 24 hours and shipping is always free for orders $99 and up. I cannot wait for my package to arrive:
You need to head over to Modnique and take advantage of their incredible savings for fashion mavens! Their 20 Days of Deals kicks off on November 7th. You can keep track of each day’s deal by either visiting Modnique, the Modnique blog, or the Modnique Facebook Page. Mark your calendar so you don't miss it!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Macy's #HHM13
Saturday, October 12, 2013
Hispanic Heritage Month wraps up this weekend, and I got the chance to celebrate in style at Macy's in San Francisco on Thursday evening. Macy's cultural events are known for combining music, fashion and cuisine is a festive mix. Macy's salute to Latino culture, history, vibrancy and their 2013 Icon of Style, Thalía did not disappoint!
When I arrived, the DJ was already hard at work filling the air with Tejano and reggaeton. Servers passed around wine from Esterlina Vineyard and appetizers. Shoppers were treated to some extra perks: copies of Thalía's CD, Vanidades magazine, and the book Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes.
Sadly, Thalía did not attend in person but Alisa Valdes made sure her spirit was present when she discussed how Thalía inspired her to write Dirty Girls Social Club (soon to be a feature film!) because she busted stereotypes by being shrewd artist who took control of her business dealings. I have already added the book to my reading list!
The highlight of the evening was the fashion show which was a tribute to Thalía's style. The must-haves for the fall is faux-leather and boots!
Which look do you like the best? What fall trend are you most excited about?
Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge: The Final Results
Thursday, October 10, 2013
Mama has been a bad girl. I didn't post my final results for the Proskins challenge that ended two weeks ago. I know some of you were waiting to see my outcomes, and I am sorry I made you wait. To make up for it I created a collage of my favorite Proskins wearable moments:
Proskins are the perfect accessory to give your fall and winter outfits an extra edge! I still wear mine to workout and relaxing around the house, too. Oh, and I didn't forget the main reason for participating in this challenge to reduce inches and cellulite from my legs. Here are my week 4 results:
I didn't lose a significant amount of inches, but I also didn't gain any so I consider this experiment a success!

What I Wore: #WordfulWednesday
Wednesday, September 11, 2013
I had one of those rare days yesterday where I felt like a true fashionista, not just someone who is always admiring another person's fashion sense. Can you relate? I know you know what I am talking about...those days you just love what you are wearing from head-to-toe!
I must brag that I hit it out of the park with this outfit! I am most proud that it is dressy casual; meant to look effortless, but don't be fooled. Look for the small elegant details:
What I wore:
Blouse: Crochet dolman sleeve with pearl collar, $26-from 9thandElm.com
Jeans: $29.99-from Ross
Earrings: hammered sterling silver gossamer leaves-gift
What grade do you give my outfit?

Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge Week 3 Update
Monday, September 9, 2013
I just completed week 3 of the Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge. To recap: I have been wearing the Proskins Slim anti-cellulite leggings every day for a minimum of 8 hours in an effort to reduce cellulite and lose inches in my legs. You can read about my journey: why I joined the challenge and my week 1 and week 2 results.
True story: I misplaced my Proskins for 3 days this week. I wore them to workout on Tuesday and then, poof, they disappeared. I couldn't remember if I removed them then forgot to put them in the laundry or if I washed them then stashed them in the wrong place. I practically tore up my house looking for them. I accused my husband of swiping them for his run (because I bragged how great they felt on a jog). I finally found them on Friday hiding in a leg of my husband's sweatpants (so it was his fault after all). I guess they slid in there while in the dryer. Here I am reunited with my Proskins:
So I didn't get a full week of wearing my Proskins, but here is the skinny (ha! pun intended) on my week 3 results:

Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge Week 2 Update
Saturday, August 31, 2013
It's the second week of the of the Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge. I have been wearing the Proskins Slim anti-cellulite leggings for 14 days now. Read my previous posts here and here.
My results are a mixed bag. I see a slight decrease in my measurements and a bigger difference in the look and feel of my legs. So while my legs don't look like bowling pins yet, they are firming up and silkier to the touch.
I think the biggest change I have experienced since I started wearing Proskins is my outlook on fitness. I realize that working out 1-2 days a weeks is not cutting it. A product like Proskins is only going to work if I do my part (as in: quit the cookies and ice cream). I am redoubling my efforts to eat clean and exercise more.
On that note, here are my challenge results to date:

Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge Week 1 Update
Friday, August 23, 2013
I'm 7 days into my journey on the Proskins SLIM 28 Day Challenge with their slimming, anti-cellulite leggings
I can say without the slightest equivocation I am loving them. These are the first leggings I feel sexy in! They are sleek and oh so slimming.
To be honest, I only wore them three days during the past week (you're supposed to wear them a minimum of 8 hrs/day for maximum effect). I have worn them to bed, underneath my slacks, and to workout. I loved, loved, loved running in my Proskins...no chaffing! I put them in the wash after each wear, which was my first mistake since I don't do laundry everyday.
You live and learn.
I am going to have to stick to using them as pajamas to keep up with the recommended amount of wearing time.
So far I can report some incremental loss in inches...woo-hoo for one inch off my hips! I can also tell you that the skin on my legs are more supple (probably from the emollients). Here are my results in numbers:

I Begin the Proskins 28-day Challenge Today
Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Here's the skinny. I am halfway through my weight loss journey. I am not trying to loss weight to meet some artificial standard of beauty. I want to feel good about myself, and I feel my best when I am fit. I think that's true for most women.
I avoid weight loss gimmicks like the plague, so I was very skeptic when I heard about the Proskins slimming, anti-cellulite leggings. But I was curious too especially when I saw some glowing reviews. My curiosity won out and I joined the Bloggers Challenge. I need all the help I can get.
What is a Proskins? It is a legging that uses compression technology along with anti-cellulite emollients that condition the skin. They have been proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite in clinical trials in Europe.
Each week I will update you on my Proskins Slim transformation. I am looking to firm the skin around my thighs and lose overall inches!
You can join me too and get 50% off the Classic Black Leggings when you sign up to participate in the 28 Day Challenge.

Here's another great deal: Use coupon code: blogshort to save 50% of Proskins shorts through August 31, 2013.

Mama's Got a Brand New Bag #WordfulWednesday
Wednesday, June 12, 2013
If we are friends on Facebook then you probably saw that I am employed again as of last Friday! It's truly a dream job. The work is meaningful, plus the hours a flexible. I'm not saying that being a working mom is going to be a breeze just because my job is part-time.
These first few days taught me that there is no way to compartmentalize the roles of mommy and employee. I already missed bath and bedtime once this week to attend an after hours work function. And there are going to be times that I have to miss work to care for a sick child. The lines are really blurred.
It's going to be a crazy, but fun, journey! One of the things I am most looking forward to is rebuilding my wardrobe. I have been rocking the over-sized tees and workout sweats for way too long. The office dress code is business casual which is good because I will be able to mix casual pieces I already own with the career clothes I plan to purchase.
My first shopping trip was, um...a trip. I went to Marshalls to buy something to wear to the work event and wound up spending two hours going through the racks and trying on clothes! I am so out of practice, but I think I put together a nice outfit.
Tell me what you think (I need to buy some make up, I know):

What I bought:
Max Studio Printed Blouse: $24.99-Marshalls
Counterparts Light Grey Pants: $16.99-Marshalls
Poppy Handbag: Franco Sarto $29.99-Marshalls
What already owned:
Earrings: Stella & Dot
Bracelet: Vintage lapis
Shoes: Naturalizer

Mother's Day Gift Ideas for the Conscious Mom
Friday, May 3, 2013
Mother's Day is one of the most commercially successful holidays in America, but that doesn't have to diminish the spirit of the occasion. Instead of buying mom flowers, look for gifts with purpose and meaning. I was honored to receive the Imagine We Are Linked, Not Ranked bracelet designed by Gloria Steinem from www.MaidenNation.com for review.
This beautiful bracelet is sold in a set of four (two solid, two with words) and is made in the USA from agate stone, wood, silver metal beads with class alphabet beads for $48. All proceeds from the sale of the bracelets benefit feminist.com, which offers people around the world access to information and support. It's the perfect gift for the conscious mom!
Maiden Nation was founded on one basic principle: empowering women through ethical fashion. Their designers are of the moment, their products are ethically sourced, and profits are reinvested into women’s entrepreneurship projects. The goal is to create a marketplace where items are designed with both beauty and social consciousness in mind.
You can become a Maiden 'citizen' by signing up and sharing your skills with the ever-growing community of other female designers. Maiden designers showcase their work, Maiden activists share their causes, and Maiden citizens connect over their ideas and goals. Review: Nui Organics 100% cotton kids clothing
Monday, April 22, 2013
You know I a HUGE supporter of Eco-fashion. So I happily accepted an opportunity to review Nui Organic's line of organic cotton apparel for children from newborn to 6 years old.
The collection includes organic essentials like onesies, sleep bags, tights and tees, but also sportswear and darling heavier weight cotton sweaters. In the Fall and Winter they carry fabulous merino wools from t-shirt weight to thicker gauge knits (peak at their online lookbook). The best part is that everything is 100% organic and certified by the Global Organic Cotton Standard (GOTS). I selected this Weymouth Terry Playsuit in Gold for Marlie. It's breathable and itch-free, so perfect for the warm weather. Plus she looks muy fashionista!
Ever since a popular television spot crowned cotton the fabric of our lives I have been educating myself on cotton production. Cotton fabric has been used to make clothing as far back as the prehistoric era but this natural material is now being grown and manufactured with toxic chemicals. The residue from these chemicals get absorbed through your skin and can harm your health. They are also bad for the environment.
Nui Organics is improving the environmental impact of cotton by using 100% certified organic cotton and sustainably sourced merino wools. Nui is an Austin based brand founded by Amanda Searanke, an eco-conscious expat New Zealander and mom. In Maori, the native language of New Zealand, 'nui' means 'big' or 'important' hence the name Nui Organics. They believe a clean start is a big thing for a little person. No harsh chemicals for your child, or their planet.

The Hottest Looks for Spring 2013 From the Macy's Men's Style Event
Monday, April 15, 2013
A working blogger's work is never done. Just this past Saturday I had to drag myself over the Bay Bridge to San Fransisco to attend the Macy's Men's Style Event and watch modeling hopefuls get their pictures taken for DETAILS Magazine's casting call. sigh. I also picked up some sartorial tips for my man when I wasn't ogling the eye candy. It was such hard work, LOL!
Seriously though, there is something special about potentially being witness to someone's dreams coming true. Each candidate was so handsome and debonair. I wouldhate love to be on the judging panel that selects the lucky winner who gets to be a feature model in DETAILS June/July issue. Who knows, this could be their big break into fashion modeling.
The folks at Macy's were on hand to review the fashion trends for men this season. The look is called Modern Minimalist. I interpret that to mean investing in a dozen or so quality pieces that you can mix and match. Bold, bright colors are also in this Spring. I even saw some shoes with pops of color in them. This is a welcome departure from the white boat shoes and brown sandals you see this time of year.

How to Dress Up for Prom with Style Tips from Mr. Kate! #MacysProm13
Monday, March 25, 2013
I was a fairy godmother in my life before kids. Yes, really! I founded a charity in Atlanta that provided prom dresses to girls with financial hardships. That experience is one of the happiest chapters of my life, so I excitedly agreed to attend Macy's Prom Fashion Show in Concord, California on Saturday so that I could re-live some of the magic.
Fashion guru, Mr. Kate hosted the fashion show and offered advice on how to take your formal look to the next level. Mr. Kate is a firecracker and we are now BFFs (even if the friendship is a one-way street).
Mr. Kate showed the audience some great ways to dress up your prom attire and help you stand out from the crowd:
Here I am at my senior prom (gotta love the gold lame' ruffled sleeves!) and pictured next to it is the dress I would wear if I was going to prom this year. As you can see I still love metallic formal wear! But what made this dress my pick of the day is the skirt. I would be posing like Angelina all night in this gown!

The most popular style trends for prom dresses this year are: ombre, metallics, color-blocking, embellished bodices, high-low skirts, mini dresses, sequins, and sparkles!

Changing this model's hairstyle to an up-do draws attention to the bodice of this gown. |
- Show off an embellished bodice with an up-do
- If you are wearing a short dress, make it all about the shoes
- Don't be afraid to mix metallics. You CAN rock chrome shoes with a cooper dress and layers of metallic necklaces or bracelets.
- Individualize your look with some daring styling: mismatch shoes, one long and one short earring, unique makeup like a painted heart on your cheek
- Spice up your ensemble with DIY embellishments such as a nail-polish splattered clutch to achieve a one-of-a-kind look

Accessorizing to personalize your prom look can have wonderfully unique results: bejeweled boots, layered metallic necklaces, clutch splattered with polish |
