Convos from the Backseat #4

Thursday, November 29, 2012

I'm toying with a new meme inspired by my conversations in the car with my chatterbox in the backseat. I would like to make it a link-up too. Let me know what you think!

Monday's conversation while driving home from preschool...

Marlie: Are we going to see the fireman station?
Me: Yes, I always drive past the fire station on the way home.
Marlie: One time daddy and me went inside!
Me: Did you like it?
Marlie: Yep, but I was shy.
Me: What does shy mean?
Marlie: It means I was not happy.
Me: But I thought you liked going inside the fire station. I think shy means you didn't talk to the fireman.
Marlie: Oh.
Marlie: Do firemen like Popsicle?
Me: I'm sure they do.
Marlie: Can we make some Popsicle for the firemen right now?
Me: It's too cold for Popsicle.
Marlie: Why?
Me: It's winter and the firemen probably want stuff that keeps them warm like soup and hot cocoa.
Marlie: And spicy chicken?
Me: um, sure.
Marlie: I don't like spicy chicken cause it make my tongue hot and I tell daddy. But I like chicken without the spicy.
Me: Oh.

Mira Mariu Cosmetics Review [Giveaway Coming!]

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Mira Mariu cosmeticsOne of the hardest things I had to do when I adopted a green lifestyle was to give up my favorite brand of makeup. It was chock full of chemicals that were bad for my skin and the environment. I stopped wearing makeup for awhile until I learned about natural and organic cosmetic lines.

Mira Mariu is a natural cosmetics line that uses Bontical-based formulas. The company was kind enough to send me several of their Perfect Finishing mineral makeup products: Mineral Primer, Mineral Cream Concealer and Mineral Cream Foundation. The makeup does contain some natural plant ingredients like Camellia Sinesis Leaf (White Tea) Extract, shea butter and aloe, but they also include parabens (a controversial synthetic preservative).
mira mariu primermira mariu mineral cream concealermira mariu mineral cream foundation
Now let's talk about efficacy of the makeup. I cannot tell a lie...it's amazing! The primer is the key to a smooth makeup application. The concealer hid the dark circles under my eyes and a couple of dark spots on my cheeks. The cream foundation matches my skin tone perfectly and didn't leave that line of demarcation between my jaw and neck. I was left with a smooth canvas that I really liked! If only Mira Mariu switched to a natural preservative, then I would be in complete love.

[Guest Post] Green Advent Meditation

Monday, November 26, 2012

I invited my former pastor to share her green craft ideas for spiritually connecting with the holiday season in a series of guest posts. Enjoy!

Green Advent Meditation
by Courtney Pinkerton

The Advent Wreath
advent wreath suppliesAdvent wreaths are an ancient way of marking each of the four weeks leading up to Christmas and celebrating the feast. This wreath couples old-world style with a repurposed materials aesthetic. It evokes the charms of the season with a gold-leafed rustic wood base, flickering candle light (in safety-conscious glass-enclosed candles) and the rich smells of rosemary, lavender and other locally-harvested herbs. It makes a lovely centerpiece for special holiday gatherings and meals. This Advent wreath is designed to appeal to all the senses. It includes several elements which can be touched, smelled and enjoyed, including:
  1. a flexible outer “wreath” of wire and vintage buttons. This wreath drapes around the candles and herbs and is created with a 3:2 pattern. It can be used as a meditation tool with even the very young; the three button pattern representing “faith, hope & charity” or other centering words and the two button pattern representing the light and the humanity within each one of us.
  2. The inner “wreath” of wire and buttons is wrapped around the Christ Candle and also can be a meditation tool: the red button represents all who suffer in our world, the blue button represents Mary, the mother of Jesus, the wooden button represents Joseph, the father of Jesus, the luminous metallic button represents the mystery of love, the yellow button represents the birth of the “child of light.” A few additional buttons have been added to the inner wreath which can serve as reminders of prayers for specific loved ones or other concerns on the heart.
  3. The bundles of organic herbs: rosemary, lavender and thyme can be handled and rubbed to release more aromas, and even used for cooking. As they dry additional aromatic clippings (such from a branch of a Christmas tree) or other natural objects (leaves, feathers etc) can also be added to fill in and personalize the wreath.
The Season of Advent
It is a time of waiting in winter darkness and anticipating the return of the light. This shifting of the natural seasons reminds us to tend to the inner light, a light of clarity and peace. The green meditation shared below helps cultivate our awareness that we belong to a greater Whole.*

green advent wreath

Advent starts this year on December 2. Begin the season by finding a home for your wreath. If you have children (old enough not to knock over the candles!) you might place it on a low table in the corner of a common room. The center of your kitchen or dining room table is also a good option. If you have a dark blue cloth/runner (the color of hope and waiting) you can drape it over the table. As the weeks go by a sense of expectancy and anticipation grows as new elements enter the scene. Each week we focus on different elements of our environment: mineral, plant, animal and human as well as centering on the four traditional Advent virtues: hope, love, joy & peace.

First Week of Advent

In week one place beautiful stones and crystals around the wreath and light the first candle as you focus on “hope,” the foundation of our spirit.

Second Week of Advent
In week two add small greenery to the house, mantle, and table. This is a great week to bring in a Christmas tree and take a quiet moment to light again the first candle and add the second candle of “love” and consider all the ways that you can nurture and grow love in your life and home.

Third Week of Advent
In week three bring out the stable or crèche with the animals in it. Light the first two candles and also the third candle in your wreath for “joy” and consider all the animals and other living creatures in our world -- the birds who surprise us with beauty on a branch, the farm animals who provide us with nourishing milk and eggs, and even earthworms who help the garden grow.

Fourth Week of Advent
Bring out Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds into the stable. Place the Magi across the room and move them slowly from windowsill to windowsill, nearer to the stable with each passing day. Light the first three candles and add the fourth candle of “Peace” and pray for peace for all areas of human conflict, including the conflicts within our own hearts. This is also a great week to make a special donation to an organization which supports peace, locally or globally.

Christmas Eve/Day
Jesus, the Child of Light, comes into the manger. Light all the candles, one by one, and remind yourself of all the hope, love, joy, and peace which has been cultivated in anticipation of this time. Light the center Christ candle, remember a baby born into a stable with only animals’ breath to keep warm and reflect on the mystery of our connections: one to another, one to the earth, one to the Light.

12 Days of Christmas
Historically Christmas was a feast which lasted over several days. Observing these twelve holy days and twelve starry nights can be a powerful antidote to the blues which often come after the holiday rush—so stretch out time and savor it! Lighting the wreath every night until January 6, also know as Epiphany, is one way to continue to enjoy the season.

* I am indebted to Waldorf educator Sharifa Oppenheimer and her book Heaven on Earth: A Handbook for Parents of Young Children for elements of the meditation I share here.

The Kids' Log: November 18-24, 2012

Sunday, November 25, 2012

How was your Thanksgiving? I hope it was filled with family, friends and food! Our little clan traveled all the way back to the Southeast to spend the holiday with Damon's mother and family. We touched down in New Orleans at nearly midnight on Sunday. After a good night's sleep, we spent the morning walking the French Quarter then we grabbed some lunch. Marlie sampled gumbo, red beans & rice, and jambalaya. She though the beans were too spicy, but she gobbled up everything else. Then we enjoyed the sounds of a brass band on the square and ate some beignets before embarking on the 2.5 hour drive to Daphne, Alabama.

It is always stressful to spend time with family around the holidays, but it also wonderfully refreshing. It recharges my spirit to be around people who have known me all or most of my life. It was sweet to see Marlie bond with her second cousin and it was sweet to see Damon's mom with her grandchildren (this was her first time meeting Desmond). So no matter how much money it costs or time is spent traveling, it is always worth it to go see family!

Toddler Log: 3 Years and 14 Weeks Old
Marlie and her cousin were inseparable! They had a few little spats, but mostly they enjoyed playing together, just like sisters. Marlie even slept over a couple of nights and we noted that this was the first time she had spent the night away from us. She takes giant developmental leaps after she's spent extended time with older kid relatives.

Baby Log: 32 Weeks Old
Little man was the star of the trip! He slept like a baby on both plane rides and smiled broadly at the passengers around us when he was awake. He enjoyed being the center of attention of course.

What I'm Watching on #Netflix

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

This week's picks from Netflix Instant Watch:

TV Show:
Once Upon A TimeOnce Upon A Time. Damon clued me into this fantasy series on ABC and it wasn't hard to get addicted. I am a fan of modern twists on classic fairy tales and this show does not disappoint. The concept is so simple and clever that it's genius...take your favorite storybook characters, give them a case of wicked amnesia, and plop them in a sleepy 21st century New England town controlled by The Evil Queen? It has cast a spell on me!

Movie:
Marion Jones 30 for 30: Marion Jones: Press Pause. ESPN produces a series of sports documentaries that chronicle some of the most dramatic athletic stories in the past 30 years. Being a devout track fan, I felt compelled to watch this film about the disgraced Olympic star because I was curious about what happened to her. Guest Director John Singleton is unflinching but compassionate in his portrayal of Marion. He digs into the scandal, but mostly focuses on her road to redemption. Marion is a wife, mother of three, churchgoer, motivational speaker and surprisingly still an athlete.

The Kids' Log: November 11-17, 2012

Sunday, November 18, 2012

I was parenting solo again this week. Instead of being pissed, I was honestly nonchalant about it. I guess that means I am getting used to it. I have discovered there are advantages to being a single parent and I used that discovery to get through the week. For instance, there isn't another adult for the child(ren) to try and play off each other. Marlie only had me to deal with so she couldn't run to daddy when I didn't give into her (and vice versa). I had to be bad cop and good cop and I think it helped to hear one message from one person. I am in no way saying I want to be a single parent, but I believe I can do it if push came to shove.

I am starting to get a glimpse of the rigors of parenting two children now that Desmond is in full motion and getting into everything, including his sister's belongings. They are having little spats already. The house is too small to separate them (I know I sound like a complete Goldilocks since I used to complain that our house in Dallas was too big). They are going to have to learn to share and play together. Marlie is usually very loving and gentle with him until it comes time to play together. She has been snatching toys from Desmond, but he doesn't take it lying down. He'll go after her or crawl to me crying. Isn't it too soon for the sibling rivalry?! I checked out a copy of Siblings Without Rivalry and it is so insightful.

Toddler Log: 3 Years and 13 Weeks Old
Every time she experiences change or is going through something she suffers a potty relapse. She has been peeing everywhere like a new puppy....on our area rug, the neighbors floor, at the gym. Sometimes she is distracted by play, which I understand. But sometimes she pees right after I have reminded her to take a potty break and she insisted that she didn't have to go. I don't know how to get to the bottom of why she won't go to the bathroom in time. Meanwhile, I am thinking of crating her(JK!).

She had her bi-annual dental check-up this week and passed with flying colors. She did so well during the exam that the dental assistant showered her with with goodies. So proud of her!

Baby Log: 31 Weeks Old
Poor baby is covered head to legs in eczema. I believe the patches on his face and neck were caused by drool so I bought him some bibs. Then there are the patches on him abdomen and bum, which must be a food allergy. I stopped giving him the Greek yogurt, but his skin kept on erupting. Finally it dawned on me to stop giving him mangoes, and voila! Within three days his skin started to improve. Friday was chilly so I put a jacket on him and his chest broke out. The metal zipper is probably nickel. I could just smack myself! All of his jackets have metal zippers. What is he supposed to wear this winter?

Three Things I'm Loving This Thursday

Thursday, November 15, 2012

I really need to start doing this meme again, it helps me take stock of all the things I enjoy. This week I am loving...
  • Spoofs. Have you seen Brad Pitt's existential Chanel No.5 commercial? It's meant to be serious, but it's Hi-larious! I think they've pulled the ad spot after all the spoofs started showing up on YouTube. SNL did a whole series of them too. But my favorite is Kennel No.5 by the charity Pet Collective.

  • 1950s portable television set
New TV Shows. It's been awhile since I got excited about the fall television season, but a few scripted shows have won me over this year: the military drama Last Resort on ABC, the juicy country music prime time soap Nashville also on ABC and FOX's adorkable The Mindy Project. I also watch on occasion: Guys with Kids (NBC) and Go On (NBC), but these comedies are a bit stiff and don't see them sticking around for long. Remember when NBC was the comedy king?!
Image Credit:By Photographer: Hana Kirana (Flickr.com - image description page) [Public domain or CC-BY-2.0], via Wikimedia Commons

  • GLEE. I hit a rough patch with my beloved musical-drama-comedy series. Too many transitions. Too many new faces. Rachel and Kirk in New York. But I should have been faithful. The how soon hit its stride and now they are preparing to perform Grease! I am shivering in anticipation, DVR at the ready. Grease is the word. What are you loving this Thursday?! Leave it in your comment :-)

Convos from the Backseat #3

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

I'm toying with a new meme inspired by my conversations in the car with my chatterbox in the backseat. I would like to make it a link-up too. Let me know what you think!

Last Friday's conversation while on the way to a playdate...

Marlie: Is Halloween happen already mommy?
Me: Yes
Marlie: So no more Halloween?
Me: Nope
Marlie: Why not?
Me: Because it's finished.
Marlie: Why it finished?!
Me: (rolling eyes) It's over for now until next time.
Marlie: But my candy is gone, the bad wolf took it! (side note: She got plenty of treats, but we threw out/gave away the bulk. Then her father told her the Big Bad Wolf stole it. Nice, I know)
Me: But you got to eat some of it, right?
Marlie: But the Bad Wolf took the rest of it and he took my bucket and went on the plane to see his family. And I need to go on the plane so I can get my bucket back and he not going to blow my house down cause I'm Batman!
Me: Okay then!
