The Hottest Looks for Spring 2013 From the Macy's Men's Style Event

Monday, April 15, 2013

A working blogger's work is never done. Just this past Saturday I had to drag myself over the Bay Bridge to San Fransisco to attend the Macy's Men's Style Event and watch modeling hopefuls get their pictures taken for DETAILS Magazine's casting call. sigh. I also picked up some sartorial tips for my man when I wasn't ogling the eye candy. It was such hard work, LOL!

Seriously though, there is something special about potentially being witness to someone's dreams coming true. Each candidate was so handsome and debonair. I would hate love to be on the judging panel that selects the lucky winner who gets to be a feature model in DETAILS June/July issue. Who knows, this could be their big break into fashion modeling.

DETAILS Magazine casting call
Is this the face of DETAILS magazine casting call winner?!

The folks at Macy's were on hand to review the fashion trends for men this season. The look is called Modern Minimalist. I interpret that to mean investing in a dozen or so quality pieces that you can mix and match. Bold, bright colors are also in this Spring. I even saw some shoes with pops of color in them. This is a welcome departure from the white boat shoes and brown sandals you see this time of year.

Check out the cool looks for men this spring. Don't you love all the color?!

I am a member of the Everywhere Society and Everywhere has provided me with compensation for this post about Macy's Men's Style. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed herein are my own.

How Much Should Parents Be Saving for Their Kid's College Fund?

Monday, April 1, 2013

The answer I received from a MassMutual Financial Adviser surprised me--it depends on each family's financial situation.

Like all moms I want to make sure that my son and daughter can pay for their higher education and I have been feeling guilty for not having college funds already set up. But according to Court Creeden, a Financial Representative with MassMutual, putting $50-$100/month into a college savings plan without looking at the big picture is not the best way to secure my children's future.

The big picture means figuring out if you are in a place to save for college right now. Do you have outstanding liabilities like credit card debt with high interests rates? Are you contributing enough in your retirement account? Do you have the necessary life and disability insurance to cover expenses in case of an unexpected tragic event? Is your emergency savings enough? If the answer is no, then you are best served holding off on the 529 plan until your financial house is in order.

If this sounds backwards to you, then welcome to the club. I am from the school of thought that puts my kids first even if it means I have to sacrifice what I want. But after talking to Court my attitude changed a bit (at least when it comes to finances. I am still giving my kid a kidney if s/he needs it).

Court says the best thing parents can do for their kid's future is to be financially fit themselves. He used a pretty effective analogy to illustrate this point. On a plane you are instructed to secure your oxygen mask first in the event of an emergency before you help your child. Makes sense, right? The last thing your child needs is for her parents to wind up living in their car so she can graduate from law school. As Court put it, "there are no loans and scholarships for retirement."

With so many competing priorities, it's hard to know where to begin. You could try guesstimating a financial plan and get most of it wrong or a better idea would be to sit down with a professional financial adviser who will take the guesswork out of the equation and help parents come up with the right financial formula for their family. Take this cool quiz to learn about your financial personality and get useful tips on becoming more financially savvy. My results indicate that I am a "knowledge craver," someone with the desire to take charge of my family's finances, but who feels there isn't enough time.

This is the year my husband and I recommit to our financial plan. We had one before the kids were born, but it hasn't been updated or followed in a long time. I would like to become more involved in the process, even in a small way and I am going to make that my goal.

Take the Quiz

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? The State of America's Visual IQ

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Did you know that I am a history/poli-sci geek? Yep. I even won my middle school social studies bowl and minored in history in college. I DVR the American Experience shows on PBS and watch anything showing on The History Channel. I thank some very cool teachers for encouraging my love of a good civics lesson.

Once upon a time, the role of the teacher in the classroom conjured up images and ideas of blackboards, rulers, chalk, and pencils. But now, technology is becoming more and more integrated into modern school systems—not just as an added bonus, but as a necessity to how students learn and how teachers teach.

While at one point in time, adopting technology into the classroom may have been perceived as stressful and forced for teachers and students alike, as it stands now, students aren’t just excited about using technology, teachers are excited and highly capable of utilizing its presence in the classroom. From smartboards to class computers to e-readers and e-textbooks, each new technology presents new modes of both teaching and learning opportunities.

Now, every day teachers with tech access are finding new ways to embrace technology and incorporate it into the classroom. As a result, teachers are more efficient than ever, and students are capable of learning faster and more efficiently. In fact, a majority of students say that technology has helped them to achieve their academic goals, while a majority of teachers say they would like to use even more technology in the classroom.

The following infographic looks into the tech-teaching phenomenon, and why teachers love it so much. I'll share my score with you if you share yours!

College Scholarship Opportunity from Nordic Naturals

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

My babies are pretty smart thanks to genetics (of course) and help from omega-3 fatty acids also called "smart fats." I'm not just bragging, there is research to back this up. According to scientific studies the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is linked to improved attention, learning, memory, behavior and higher test scores in children.

I first learned about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids for brain development when I was pregnant. When I asked what brand was the best my obstetrician, the health food store manager, and my children's pediatrician all said Nordic Naturals. It was comforting to know that they all shared the same opinion! Nordic Naturals has become a staple of my family's diet because they help your brain continue to develop long after birth. My daughter gets the Omega-3 Jellies, my son gets the Cod Liver Oil and I still take Nordic Prenatal DHA, which has helped me overcome "mommy brain."

Nordic Naturals’ recently announced its “Learn. Inspire. Change. 2013 What’s Essential Essay Scholarship” for new and returning college students. As part of the company’s “What’s Essential” campaign, Nordic Naturals is challenging the next generation to learn what’s essential to them, inspire healthy and positive choices in others, and become the new face of change that shapes our world.

Nordic Naturals Scholarship Flyer

Scholarship applicants will be asked to answer the question:
What are the essential components of the education that your generation needs to make a positive impact on the world?
The applicant who best answers the question in 1000-1500 words will receive $5000 for college and a year’s supply of Nordic Naturals’ award-winning omega-3 products. The essay and accompanying application materials will be accepted on Nordic NaturalsFacebook page from January 1 through March 31, 2013. The scholarship recipient will be named on Facebook on or around June 1, 2013.

SHE Needs You: Support LaunchPad Pilot Project With One Click

Thursday, December 13, 2012

You may have already finished your charitable giving for the year, but thanks to the power of social media you can still make a significant contribution to a cause.

I had not heard of SHE (Sustainable Health Enterprises) until a fellow blogger shared information with me about the SHE28 holiday campaign. I am so glad she did because SHE is the kind of innovative non-profit organization that I believe is going to change the world.

SHE recognizes that donations are temporary fixes so they've developed market-based strategies to solve social and economic problems. SHE invests in people and ideas that are often overlooked because the are socially taboo like their current initiative to bring sanitary products to menstruating women in developing countries worldwide.
SHE eco maxi-pad
A girl's life does not have to stop every 28 days if she has access to affordable maxi-pads, PERIOD.
Right now SHE is raising funds and awareness of their ongoing campaign for SHE LaunchPads - an innovative, chemical-free, low-cost menstrual product that utilizes banana-fiber as the absorbent core.

Did you know that every 28 days, million of girls and women miss school or work - up to 50 days per year - because they lack access to affordable, eco-friendly menstrual pads?

SHE will be producing 300,000 SHE LaunchPads for 3,000 Rwandan school girls attending 10 schools in the Kayonza district with the mass manufacturing of their SHE LaunchPads during their industrial-scale pilot in 2013. The project is also creating economic opportunities and jobs by parterning with a sustainable and scalable business model operated and owned by women in the community.

Banana farmer extracting fiber
SHE is training banana farmers to mechanically extract banana fiber,
which creates new income & sustains the supply.

Rise of the Guardians: The Christmas Movie to Go See!

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about Christmas traditions to do with my family. One activity I'd like to start is going to a movie on Christmas Day.

My choice for this year is the animated film Rise of the Guardians starring Alec Baldwin, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman, and Chris Pine and directed by Peter Ramsey, the first African-American to direct an animated film.&

Rise of the Guardians is an eye-popping visual story of how a band of chilhood mythical characters like including Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy join forces to stop an evildoer from taking over the world. Judging from the trailer, it is a thrilling adventure for moviegoers. It is also rated PG so, its the kind of holiday film the entire family can enjoy.

Marlie and me watched the trailer together and she is definitely excited about the movie. After opening the box of goodies we received, she was even more amped!

Mary Mary Inspired Me to Improve My Work and Family Balance

Monday, December 3, 2012

In my LB4K (life before kids) I was a hard-charging professional and very active in my community. At one point I was working full-time, taking night classes toward a graduate degree, and running a volunteer charity. You could say I had too much on my plate. Then I became a mother and I could not continue to burn the candle at both ends. I took a temporary leave from the workforce to focus on raising my babies, a decision I have never regretted.

Still, it was a confusing time for me. I was so proud to be a mommy, but at the same time I felt distressed that my degrees and work experience were going to waste. It wasn't long though before I was plotting a comeback...guess you can't keep a career girl down! I started slowly with work-at-home opportunities that provided some income and helped me keep up my skills.

Working at home has its advantages, but it's not easy street. I have to work around nap time and housework. It's also easy to get distracted by television! Reality TV is one of my weaknesses. While watching a sneak preview of the season 2 premiere of Mary Mary* I discovered that these two highly successful, high-profile women struggled with work/life balance just like other mothers.

The dynamic signing duo is back on tour promoting their latest record, but Tina is pregnant and pushing herself too hard while Erica is still recovering from recently giving birth. I could really relate with Erica's situation. I suffered a real identity crisis when I became a first-time mom and also faced some health concerns.

You have to tune in for the Mary Mary Season 2 premiere on Thursday, December 6th at 10|9c To find out how the sisters of Mary Mary are managing their professional and personal relationships (set your DVR if you are an early bird like me!).

The episode got me thinking about whether I am doing everything possible to maintain healthy work/family balance in my life. The lines sometime get blurred because I work at home and I feel like I am pulled in two different directions. The show gave me some ideas on how women effectively juggle career and family that I think are universal whether you work at home or outside the home:
  1. Get organized: keeping a schedule prevents you from overbooking your time, missing important appointments, and losing your mind.
  2. Ask for help: don't be ashamed to enlist family, friends or hired help to keep all the balls in the air.
  3. Be flexible: being open to an alternative work schedule can free up hours to spend with family.
  4. Know your limits: take a timeout once in awhile to regroup and then get back in the game! Also, learn to say no so that you don't get burned out
  5. Get centered: De-stress with prayer, yoga, or meditation. A mom with inner balance has a better grasp on work and family balance.

*Mary Mary is a reality television show that follows the three-time Grammy® award-winning gospel duo Mary Mary (Erica andTina Campbell). Season two will find the sisters experiencing the busiest time of their career. They are promoting their new single "Go Get It," touring across the U.S. (Joyfest, Gospelfest, Celebrate Brooklyn Concert, Chicago Gospel Music Festival, etc.) and capping their summer by receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Essence Festival alongside Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, and others. Tina is due with her fifth child and Erica recently gave birth to Zaya, complicating the pressure that the sisters already feel when they are performing and away from home.
