Baby Log: Week 33

Sunday, April 11, 2010

This was a week of wonders despite Marlie's new round of night-waking (teething? growth spurt? both?). Her daddy and me cannot agree on a course of action. My vote is for comforting/co-sleeping. He votes for letting her cry-it-out. He believes that she should learn to put herself back to sleep. Funny. I am an adult and I still cannot fall asleep without the television on. Marlie doesn't suck her thumb and never took a pacifier, so someone please tell me how the heck she is supposed to soothe herself? All I know is that I am very tired and feeling blah, so no pictures this week (sorry). I'll keep y'all posted on the Great Baby Sleep Battle of 2010. What else happened...
  • We celebrated Marlie's first Easter
  • I bought a sippy cup for her and filled it with diluted apple juice. So far she just throws the cup on the floor.
  • Marlie tried plums, mango and grapes this week. I got her a baby feeder and we have been putting slices of frozen and fresh fruit in them. She loves to feed herself. Big hit!
  • She is still teething. Her second bottom tooth broke through on Saturday. She is starting to bite. She bit me on the neck...the little vampire.
  • She took her first baby steps while holding on to the rails in her crib. One small step for baby, one giant leap for babykind!
  • We had a lot of play dates this week...Brandy and Orlaith at the mall, Catalina and Bella at the cafe. We also made our second trip to the grocery store without daddy. On Saturday, we went with some friends on an art crawl and had some people over for dinner.
  • Speaking of socializing...I've had it with random strangers coming up to me to ask how old my child is only to turn around and make a rude comment about how "small" she is...the implication being that she is not getting enough to eat. I had it out with some woman at the grocery store on Wednesday. She did the whole oh-my-gosh-she-is-so-cute-how-old-is-she? bit. I told her that Marlie is 7.5 months. Her response was really?! She is so tiny! Something in me snapped. So I asked her pointedly what she meant by that. She looked stunned, but she didn't back off. She continued her rude line of questioning by asking me if I didn't think she was small compared to other babies her age. WTF?! So I say, "I think she is perfect." We just stare at each other for a few seconds. My eyes are begging her to keep dishing the snark because I have some choice words ready to fly out my mouth that start with F and end in U--if you catch my drift. Instead she just gives me one last glare and walks away. Score: Momma Bear-1 Stupid Hag-0. grrr.
  • No giveaway wins this week...I'm having a dry spell :-(

lmao@ you having that 'moment' with the lady....
i had/have the same issue...my little one was so small when born, grew being so slim and 'small' but a huuuuuge eater, and not only that, but acts much older than present age, so people are always shocked when they know the true age, and ohhh trust me, i get comments too, and stares, and 'advices'!!!
unfortunately, it will not stop..but hang in there, she's too precious to bother with them!!

People just don't think before they make comments to us moms and a lot of others are just very opinionated and think they are right. I've had to dish it out with people for calling my baby girl "big". She is in no way fat or chunky or big. She's extremely tall and skinny so they see her length and say shes a fatty. Jerks. lol

You are definitely tired.

Alyssa was smalllllllllllllllllllll and I loved it because, as you know, I didn't ever want her to grow up!!! Look at it from this point of view and when someone says she's small, say, "Why yes! Isn't it great! She is going to take after the gymnasts in my family. We might be thinking Olympics before we know it." (wink, wink)

Alyssa is still small because she took after my father's mother who only reached the height of 4'11" and was just the cutest woman ever.

I have the opposite problem of the "too big" baby. Most people ask my why Lila isn't walking and when I tell them she is only 11 months they look at me like I am full of crap. I feel like things like this go hand in hand with comments like "are you having twins?". It's called think before you speak.

Also, as far as sleeping goes, have you tried some other sort of comfort item or something in her room? I know you aren't supposed to have things in the crib, but at about 7 or 8 months we used a knitted, very lightweight and breathable small blanket that a family friend made. It is now Lila's favorite blanket and I have to wash it all the time! We also have a Baby Einstein aquarium that attaches to the crib that she loves. You have probably tried all sorts of things, but these are the things that have worked for me! Good luck.

I agree with you - cry-it-out is not the answer. The good thing about co-sleeping is that you can nurse her back to sleep without either of you having to wake up all the way.

Also, some people just don't know when to keep their mouths shut. SMH.

My husband and i would have the same disagreement. When they scream out in fear, i cuddle. sometimes i would let them cry themselves back to sleep but that's only if i'm comfortable.

Leah has always been small too. She was born at 6lbs, 12oz, and has stayed in the bottom 5th percentile or below her whole life for weight. She is about in the middle for height though. At 2 1/2, she only weighs 26.5 lbs. My standard line for people is that my pediatrician isn't worried, because she continues to grow. And, I would rather her be too small than too big! We have an 10 month old neighbor who weighs more than Leah does, and trust me, I don't think that is so healthy either. Isn't it amazing how much advice people feel the need to give when you've got a baby?

Ugh! People always have something to say about a baby...no matter what. What happened to he/she is cute and keeping it moving? People always say Lewis is "so big" and "so heavy". He's in the 60th percentile for weight...that makes him pretty average.

Good luck with the battle. I oddly enough find myself curious about the cry it out thing because I want Lewis sleeping in his OWN bed in his OWN room. I just think we will all sleep better that way. That isn't happening right now and it chaps my hide. I don't want to look up and have a one-year old who is kicking me under the covers.

I love your stand off with the lady at the grocery store! I know how you feel. I wear Orlaith in a sling when we go shopping so I can have two free hands. Plus she loves being close to me. I have had SO MANY people come up to me about the recalled baby slings. I have also had many people just give me extrememly rude looks for wearing her. Apparently they all think I am going to smother and kill my child while she is sitting up in the sling and looking around. How about a big F and U to all of them for passing judgement on me for something they know nothing about - except what the news media told them. I am sure the news reports were totally unbiased, told the whole story and educated it's viewers about baby wearing... Yeah right!

I have the opposite issue with my kids being big. I have to say that I might say something like "she's so tiny", but mean that she is so cute. At the same time, some people use a certain tone when they say to me, "Oh, she's a big girl, isn't she?" I usually just ignore them, but I'd love to have a pat retort.
