Baby Log: Week 17

Sunday, December 20, 2009

It has been an interesting roller coaster ride of a week...lots of ups and downs. Marlie had her 4-month wellness exam mid-week and received her first vaccination (she took it like a champ!). The immunization debate is confusing for parents. I understand both sides for (preventing serious illness and death in children, eradicating diseases) and against (adverse reactions from toxins, possible links to autism) vaccines, but it doesn't make the decision any easier. I read The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears and it helped a lot. Ultimately, her daddy and me decided that she'd get shots for the four diseases that can be fatal in infancy and we'd tackle the rest on a case-by-case basis. Here's the low-down on Marlie's whirlwind week:

The Bad:

  • Marlie is going through some weird phase. Several nights she has kept us up by waking every two hours. She's not crying because she's wet or hungry...she wants to play! It's killing us! I'm so tired that I didn't even taken any pictures this week.
  • She is not eating well. She gets distracted when she nurses, wants to play around when it's feeding time, and won't finish eating. This has caused her weight to plateau. Her pediatrician wants me to stop nursing on demand to break her of the snacking habit. I was upset until she explained that by letting Marlie graze, she's only getting foremilk and not enough of the nutrient/calorie-rich hindmilk. So I have implemented OPERATION TOUGH LOVE and it is starting to work. She is nursing 7-10 minutes on each side versus the 5 minutes she had been doing for the last two weeks.
The Good:

baby Marlie first Christmas treeMarlie and Me are going to take a break from blogging this week to spend time with our favorite person...hubby/daddy! Have yourselves a merry, little Christmas & Happy Holidays!

Awww, love that picture of Marlie next to the tree!

Just when you think you are in a comfortable routine and getting used to life with a baby, THEY CHANGE THE RULES - LOL.

I hope you and your family have the best Christmas EVER!

She is the most adorable Santa's helper! I love the hat and socks :) I remember all my kids getting distracted when they were nursing. It's a normal phase. Just wait. She'll be going through growth spurts and nursing like a trooper all the time :) So cute that she found her feet!

The vaccine debate is a tough one. When my eldest three were young, I had never even heard of not getting vaccines. When I first heard of it, I thought it was the craziest thing that I had ever heard of (I thought the same thing about homeschooling and look at me now). It was made an even harder decision for me by the fact that as a child, my brother almost died from chickenpox, and my son had to be hospitalized when he had rota virus as a toddler. So I had first hand experience that these typical childhood illnesses can kill. Meanwhile, my eldest has Asperger's, though the signs were there well before he got the MMR. And daughter #2 had a bad reaction to a pertusis shot (back then it was acellular or something). In the end, we decided to do the full vaccination regimen, but I still question the decision and it has caused many a sleepless night. That is too bad about Marlie's weight. As anyone who has seen a photo of Vivi can tell, we've never had problems with her not nursing enough. :-) Have a wonderful holiday season!

Those immunizations are so hard on Mommys! I have to turn my head so Grace won't see me well up when she screams.

Feet are an amazing discovery! Helpful when changing diapers!

the immunization battle is a tough one. we chose to do them one by one, and didn't do some of the ones we didn't feel were necessary.

i emailed you the interview answers last night, just wanted to make sure you got them :) let me know when you're posting it! (next week?)
