Mama's Got a Brand New Bag #WordfulWednesday

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

If we are friends on Facebook then you probably saw that I am employed again as of last Friday! It's truly a dream job. The work is meaningful, plus the hours a flexible. I'm not saying that being a working mom is going to be a breeze just because my job is part-time.

These first few days taught me that there is no way to compartmentalize the roles of mommy and employee. I already missed bath and bedtime once this week to attend an after hours work function. And there are going to be times that I have to miss work to care for a sick child. The lines are really blurred.

It's going to be a crazy, but fun, journey! One of the things I am most looking forward to is rebuilding my wardrobe. I have been rocking the over-sized tees and workout sweats for way too long. The office dress code is business casual which is good because I will be able to mix casual pieces I already own with the career clothes I plan to purchase.

My first shopping trip was, um...a trip. I went to Marshalls to buy something to wear to the work event and wound up spending two hours going through the racks and trying on clothes! I am so out of practice, but I think I put together a nice outfit.

Tell me what you think (I need to buy some make up, I know):
working mom fashion

What I bought:
Max Studio Printed Blouse: $24.99-Marshalls
Counterparts Light Grey Pants: $16.99-Marshalls
Poppy Handbag: Franco Sarto $29.99-Marshalls

What already owned:
Earrings: Stella & Dot
Bracelet: Vintage lapis
Shoes: Naturalizer

Cute! Loving that bag.

Finding a balance is hard, take it easy on yourself and know that you will survive. My kids are teens and I still have to remember that it's about balance.

I like everything about your look but the shoes are the MOST FAB!!! I am a huge Franco Sarto fan so I always want to know what's up with his designs. Hope you will keep letting us see the wardrobe

Congrats again on the job! I'm jealous of your Marshall's! When I lived in CA, I shopped there all the time. Here, the Marshall's is in a nice enough area, but it is gross. Ross is somewhat better, though they are always way understaffed, so the lines are long. Nordstrom's Rack is just a shopping nightmare, it's always over crowded and hot. Our TJ Maxx has no clothes to speak of, I don't know how it even stays in business. So if I actually dare to go on a real shopping trip, as opposed to a virtual online one, I usually hit the outlet mall.

I love this! I never stayed at home for any significant amount of time, but having worked I know that the adjustment is huge. You will definitely hit points where you feel like you suck at both - employee and mother. We do our best and we do what makes us happiest. I don't think anyone is alwys happy in either situation so stay where you feel the most comfortable. :)

I'm not a fashionista, but I think you look very easy breezy yet office appropriate! Am I the only person who hates shipping for clothing at Marshall's/TJ Maxx?!? It is way overwhelming. Too many clothes. Too many brands. Great deals but I can't handle it!

You look so cute and I love Marshalls! You are going to be amazing at your new job and everything will start to go smoothly before you know it. And I agree with Krissy...You don't need makeup at all...you're gorgeous!

I think clothes are my favorite part of working outside the house so I envy your need to update your wardrobe!

That's a great outfit and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! I'm so thrilled for you. I know all too well the transition back to work is not easy. Once you start getting the real hang of it though, you'll find a new kind of balance - the good enough mom balance. You'll start realizing that maybe they don't need a bath every night. Maybe reading to them at least three times a week is okay. You'll realize what a luxury eating with other adults on your lunch break can be. And I am so with you on the wardrobe. I love putting together my work outfits - we're business casual too. I mix in a lot of thrifted items. I've found so many great, in good shape, high end brand names at Goodwill and Value Village. And don't even get me started on shoes! I love shoes!!!!! xoxo Big hugs my friend.
