Baby Log: Week 42

Sunday, June 13, 2010

It's been a slow week. It's too hot to go outside and Marlie and me are getting so bored! Keeping her entertained (and out of trouble) during the day is not easy. Starting next Wednesday Marlie will be going to a Montessori nursery school in our community. I feel like I should warn her teacher that she runs on batteries. Stuff that happened this past week:
  • Marlie is going through a phase where she doesn't want to be spoon fed. I'm all for her being independent and self-reliant, but she cannot manage utensils yet. So she is only eating foods that she can pick up and feed herself: Cheerios, artisan breads, noodles, chunks of soft fruits. All her beautiful pureed veggies are just sitting in the freezer. Does anyone know how long this phase will last?
  • New food this week: blueberries! She loves them and I love trying to get blueberries stains out of her white tees.
  • New objects I fished out of her mouth this week: lint, a plastic screw, a staple.
  • I had my first sewing lesson this week. Sewing is a lot harder than it looks!
  • There has been a paucity of photos on this blog lately because I hate my rickety point-and-shoot camera. I am jonesing for a digital SLR. Maybe I can win one...just putting it out there into the universe.
  • I won a $50 gift card to CSN Stores from the blog Stereos and Souffles!

Congrats on your gift card win. $50 is a nice chunk of change. Good luck with sewing. I learned when I was a teenager. You'll get better with practice. I have no kiddos so no advice on Marlie asserting her independence. Good luck. Hopefully its a short phase.

my little one did the whole eating with the hands too...they have better control of what they put in their food...might i suggest to keep giving her foods that she can pick up with her hands (no sauce on them) and slowly introduce to her the fork and spoon after a while...give her as many fruits and vegetables as you can...make them colorful in her plate...hope this helps....

A staple? Now you know why I vacuumed every morning before Alyssa woke up...yes, it was THAT early!

My daughter ate with her hands for a long time. In fact, she's 2 1/2 and while she CAN use utensils, sometimes she prefers to just use her hands.

We started by putting the food on the utensils for her, then she would just pick them up and eat the food off them. Slowly, she started doing it herself...but still...direct handling sometimes just cuts out the middle man LOL

Blueberry stains are tough. Have fun with that cute little one :)

Yes, the independence has hit a new level! Go, Marlie!! LOL! I love that you're doing things to facilitate her independence as opposed to trying to stop her.

And oooh, a sewing class! I'm itching to take one of those myself! Happy sewing...

V hates being spoon fed, she really never tolerated it much. At 20 months, she is pretty good with a spoon. I did have to nix her sister's idea of giving her tomato soup though. Stain-free clothes are a thing of the past for her and me. Last week, she got car sick. So I quickly bathed her while she screamed bloody murder (she hates baths) and rushed out the door. I thought I didn't clean her well enough because she smelled like throw up still. That is, until I realized that it was me that smelled, because I had throw up all over my white shirt and had been out in public that way for hours...
