nursery rhymes are disturbing

I don't have the best voice, but that doesn't stop me from singing to my Marlie. Being the oldest of six children, you would think that I know all the popular nursery rhymes by heart. Not! You would laugh listening to me make up words to the simple "Hush-a-bye-Baby." So, I decided to look up the lyrics:
Hush a bye baby, on the tree top;
When the wind blows the cradle will rock; When the bow breaks; the cradle will fall; And down will come baby; cradle and all.

WTH! Why would anyone want to sing about their baby falling from a tree top to his/her inevitable death? I also learned that
Ring Around the Rosy is about the Bubonic plague and Jack and Jill is about the beheading of the French royals King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. How horrible! I've decided to stick to singing my slightly revamped version of Close To You by the Carpenters :

Why do birds
Suddenly appear?
Everytime you are near
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

Why do stars
Fall down from the sky?
Everytime you walk by
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together and decided
To create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moondust in your hair
Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue brown

That is why all the girls boys in town
Follow you all around
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

I can't believe it! I sang "You A My Sunshine" and "Close To You" to Alyssa all the time and I changed the eye color to brown too! That's spooky! LOL!

What can I say, "Great minds think alike!" I'm still loving the picture from Saturday. She is just so cute!

I had no idea about the origins of those rhymes that is really creepy.

Rainbow Connection was the song I sung to my son all the time and he loved it. Abby never liked to be sung to until recently, she's rather you just talk to her.

I have always known about the nursery rhyme songs and their crazy lyrics, but I still sing them...why? Maybe because they were sung to me. I often sing Rock a Bye Baby. I try to come up with my own lyrics to replace the part about the baby falling cradle & all.

Definitely something to think about.

I always sing:

"Rock a bye baby ... the cradle will fall and mommy will catch you, cradle and all!"

I also sing songs my grandmother sang to me: You Are My Sunshine was her favorite.

Both of my girls loved Rock a Bye Baby when they were little. Ava even asked me to sing it to her a couple of months ago.

Both girls sing it to their babies. I also love Hush Little Baby.

This post had me cracking up!
